What is Rolfing?
RolfingĀ® is a way of restructuring bodies. More accurately, Rolfing is a process of allowing. By easing the restrictions and tightness you have in your body, Rolfing allows your body to re-balance itself in concert with the force of gravity to become more vertical and symmetrical.
What might symmetry mean to me?
Reducing internal strains has many benefits. Many of the common musculo-skeletal problems that people suffer - so-called "over-use injuries" or "repetitive-strain injuries" as well as other back
and joint problems - result from tissues being stretched beyond their limits, which leads to cell breakdown and inflammation. For some the difference is feeling "at home" in their bodies.
How does Rolfing work?
By gently lengthening, stretching, and loosening the muscle and connective tissue (called fascia), Rolfing lets you redesign the patterns of your body. The way you stand, how you hold yourself and move are all patterned behaviors. They are the result of neurological patterns that you've been learning since you were born, and mechanical patterns from injuries, repeated use and repeated misuse. Sometimes patterns seem to be written in stone. Most of them can be changed.
The effects of improved balance are many-fold. They span the spectrum from freedom from pain to the freedom to "Be".
Rolfing and Other Modalities
Because I use several modalities in my work which are not part of the Rolf Institute Standards of Practice, I invite your questions, if you have them, about what is or is not considered Rolfing. If you come to me specifically for Rolfing, I'll let you know before we begin about techniques I use which are not traditionally part of Rolfing. Examples include using a cold laser for reducing neural inflamation and chiropractic adjustments (I always ask before using).
